 حسن این رمان این است که هم جذاب میباشد و هم اینکه متنش تا حدودی مربوط به عصر ماست و عبارتهائی را که بکار برده است است قدیمی و نا مانوس نیستند. کلماتی را که داخل پرانتز هستند برای توضیح بیشتر عبارت آورده شده اند و ترجمۀ متن اصلی را در بر ندارند.

سعی شده است که متن اصلی را به قطعات کوتاه تقسیم کنم و بعد آنها را ترجمه کنیم تا تطبیق متن با ترجمه آسان تر باشد.

Chapter One

 

It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.

 

روزی آفتابی و سرد در ماه آوریل بود. و ساعتها سیزده بار زنگ میزدند (1 بعد از  ظهر). وینستون اسمیت که در تلاش برای فرار کردن از سرمایۀ زننده، (سوزان) چانه اش را به سینه اش چسبانده بود، به سرعت از لای درهای شیشه ای عمارت بزرگ پیروزی (اسم عمارت) به درون خزید. هرچند آنقدر سرعتش زیاد نبود که مانع شود که گرد و خاک شن آلود که در هوا شناور بودند (میچرخیدند) را با خود به داخل نیاورد.

strike: if a clock strikes one, two, six etc, its bell makes a sound once, twice, six times etc according to what time it is.

The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it a colored poster, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. It depicted simply an enormous face, more than a meter wide: the face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features.

 

راهرو بوی کلم پخته و (بوی) پادری نخ نمای قدیمی میداد. ته یک طرف راهرو پوستری رنگی که برای نمای داخل خیلی بزرگ بود، به دیوار زده شده بود. به راحتی چهرۀ عظیمی را نشان میداد به پهنای بیش از یک متر، چهرۀ مردی حدودا چهل و پنج ساله با سبیل مشکی پرپشت و نمای تنومند و زیبا.

Winston made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours.

 

وینستون به سوی پله رفت. سعی در استفاده از آسانسور بی فایده بود. حتی در بهترین لحظه ها (که مثلا قدرت برق خوب بود) هم به ندرت کار میکرد (چه رسد به) الان که جریان برق در ساعتهای روز قطع بود.

 It was part of the economy drive in preparation for Hate Week. The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way.

 

این (قطع برق) به عنوان بخشی از برنامۀ صرفه جوئی به مناسبت مقدمات هفته نفرت بود آپارتمان وینستون هفت ردیف پله بالاتر بود (در طبقۀ هفتم بود) و وینستون که 39 سال داشت و در بالای قوزک پای راستش زخم واریس داشت، به آرامی جلو رفت و چندین بار در میان راه استراحت کرد.

تو هر پاگرد روبروی میلۀ آسانسور پوستر آن چهرۀ بزرگ بر روی دیوار به آدم زل میزد. اون یکی از تصاویری است که آنقدر خوب نقاشی شده است که چشمهای آن هنگام راه رفتنت دنبالت میکنند. زیر آن نوشته شده بود: برادر بزرگ تو را نظاره میکند.

BIG BROTHER: a character in the novel 1984 by George Orwell. Big Brother is the leader of the state, and although no one has ever met him there are pictures of him everywhere with the message "Big Brother is watching you". People now use the expression 'Big Brother' to describe any government or organization that has complete power, allows no freedom, and carefully watches what people are doing.

 

لفظ "برادر بزرگ" در داستان جورج اورول به معنی آدمی است که در راس امور میباشد و تصویرش همه جا هست ولی کسی او را نمیشناسد. الان در محاورات روزمره به معنی کسی است که در راس امور است و مراقب کردار و گفتار افراد زیر سلطۀ خویش است.

Inside the flat a fruity voice was reading out a list of figures which had something to do with the production of pig-iron.

 

درون آپارتمان، صدائی دلنشین (به گوش میرسید که) یک لیست از افرادی که  در زمینۀ تولید قطعات آهن فعالیت میکردند را میخواند.

صدا از یک صفحۀ فلزی مستطیل شکلی که مانند یک آئینۀ تار بود به گوش می رسید که بخشی از دیوار سمت راست را تشکیل میداد.

وینستون کلیدی را چرخاند و صدا اندکی کم شد ولی همچنان قابل فهم بود. اون وسیله را (همان دستگاه مستطیل شکل که به آن تله اسکرین میگفتند) میشد کمی تار کرد اما هیچ راهی برای خاموش کردن کامل آن وجود نداشت.

او به سوی پنجره رفت. اندامی ریز نقش و ضعیف داشت. خردی اندامش اش کاملا با (پوشیدن) روپوش آبی رنگی که یونیفورم حزبشان بود تشدید میشد.

 His hair was very fair, his face naturally sanguine, his skin roughened by coarse soap and blunt razor blades and the cold of the winter that had just ended.

 

موهای سرش خیلی بور بود و صورتش به طور طبیعی قرمز رنگ بود. پوستش بر اثر مصرف صابون زبر و تیغ کند و سرمای زمستان که تازه تمام شده بود، زبر شده بود.

Outside, even through the shut window-pane, the world looked cold. Down in the street little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky a harsh blue, there seemed to be no color in anything, except the posters that were plastered everywhere.

 

بیرون، حتی از میان شیشۀ پنجرۀ بسته، دنیا سرد به نظر می آمد. پائین تو خیابان پیچش های کوچک باد، غبار و کاغذپاره ها را به شکل مارپیچ به حرکت در می آورد و هرچند که خورشید می درخشید و آسمان به رنگ آبی تند بود، به نظر می آمد که بر چهرۀ هیچ چیز رنگ نبود مگر بر چهرۀ پوسترهائی که همه جا (با گچ) نصب شده بود.

 The black mustachioed face gazed down from every commanding corner. There was one on the house-front immediately opposite. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption said, while the dark eyes looked deep into Winston’s own.

 

آن چهره با سبیل پرپشت مشکی از چشم انداز هر گوشه به آدم زل می زد. یکی از آنها جلو خانۀ مقابل قرار داشت. زیر آن نوشته شده بود: "ناظر کبیر تو را می نگرد" و چشمان سیاه آن به چشمان وینستون خیره می نگریست.
